The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1919)

Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari, or The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari directed by Robert Weine was one of the first of the German Expressionist movement. A story of hypnotism, somnambulism and quite possibly murder. The film uses sets that force the viewer to see reality the way that the director wants you to see it, with dark shadows, impossibly weird angles and forced perspectives. Seems to dwell in the dream world of a mad man (I guess) to create eerie atmospheres that are not easily forgotten. I have seen this one several times and may be the one that really established my love of silent movies.
